Weekly Gazette (Jan. 26-Jan.30)

What is My Child Learning This Week?

Math-We continue our unit on measurement. This week, our focus is temperature. We also begin learning double-digit subtraction with regrouping.
Reading-We will be reading chapters two (2) and three (3) of Magic Tree House. Skills include identifying important details, cause and effect, and summarizing. 
Writing-Students continue writing their science reports for the science fair! We continue with cursive writing. 
Science-We begin our unit on Force and Motion. Students continue working on their science fair projects. Everything is coming along great!
Grammar focus- Our focus is sentence fluency which means having a variety of sentence structures within a writing piece. 

Tests and Quizzes 
  • Timed subtraction quiz Friday, January 30th.

Reminders
  • Color's Day is Friday, January 30th.
  • Students need to bring their Magic Tree House book to school everyday.

Our New Class Pet!

We have a new friend in our classroom.  His name is Max Thumper, and he's a Chia Pet! This post is to send a thank you to Mrs. Love (Ms. Love's mom :) ) for sending Room 2B a new friend. Thanks Mrs. Love!

Weekly Gazette (Week of Jan. 19th-Jan.23rd)


What is My Child Learning This Week?

Math-reading and writing time from an analog clock; elapsed time; the four seasons; 100th Day of School activities!!!!!!
Reading-chapter book, Magic Tree House: Night of the Ninjas. We are reviewing this week the skills of summarization, story elements,  and how to strategically locate information in the text. 
Writing-We are publishing our dinosaur stories; students will begin to draft their science reports this week. We continue with cursive writing.
Science-This is our last week studying dinosaurs and fossils. We will be focusing on our science experiments this week! (yeah!!!)
The grammar focus this week is on using transition words in writing such as also, too, in addition, next, etc. Also, we will focus on combining smaller sentences to make more complex sentences. 

Tests and Quizzes This Week
  • Friday, January 23rd is the subtraction timed test (4 minutes for 30 problems).
  • Time/elapsed time quiz this Friday also. Study guide is in your child's homework folder.
  • Quiz on Magic Tree House (prologue and chapter 1) this Thursday. Study guide went home today.
  • Vocabulary quiz on fossils/dinosaurs this Wednesday. Study guide went home today.
Reminders
  • The 100th Day of School is this Thursday, January 22nd. Students may wear a special shirt.
  • Please return report cards no later than Wednesday, January 28th.

Weekly Gazette (Jan. 12-Jan.16)

What is My Child Learning This Week?

Math-We begin learning about time to the hour, half hour, and 5 minute intervals. Elapsed time will also be reviewed.

Reading-We begin the chapter book, Magic Tree House: Night of the Ninjas. We will cover various skills such as story elements, character traits, cause and effect, summarization, inferencing, fact/opinion, etc. EAch skill will be mentioned as we discuss it. This week, however, we are focusing on vocabulary development from chapters 1-3.

Writing- Students are continuing the writing process with their dinosaur stories. We have been focusing on irregular spelling patterns such as -tion and -ize. Students began cursive writing this week.

Science- fossils; students are beginning to learn about the scientific process/method.


Important Reminders/Dates
  • Students will have a timed subtraction quiz this Friday, January 16th. They will have 4 minutes to answer 30 problems.
  • No other tests and quizzes this week.
  • Report cards will be sent home this Friday, January 16th.
  • Please don't forget to return graded papers by January 23rd.
  • 3-ring binders are to be in no later than January 23rd.
