Weekly Gazette (April 26th-April 30th)

What's My Child Learning This Week?

Word Wall- Our word wall words this week focus on prefixes and suffixes: teacher, cheerful, unkind, rewrite, homeless. We will focus on words with prefixes and suffixes for the next two weeks.

Reading- We begin a new unit, a story called Pushing Up the Sky. The main focus skill/strategy is problem, solution, and visualizing. The text is written as a play! Text book pages are 198-211.

Math-We continue with multiplication. Students are learning what multiplication is and how to apply it to everyday situations. Students need to begin practicing multiplication time tables. Timed tests will begin next week.

Science-This is our last week studying simple machines. We are also preparing for the science fair!

Writing-Students are learning how to write a good conclusion for a story. Students are sharing and publishing their work this week!


Tests/Quizzes This Week

*Reading comprehension quiz Thursday, April 29th. Study guide went home Monday, April 26th.

*Word Wall quiz Friday, April 30th.

*Plato Test begins this week. This is a school-wide computerized math assessment. Students were assessed in September and January. This month, students will take the final exam. It is very important that students do their best. Please talk with your child about taking his or her time and doing the best job! :)


Important Reminders
*Color's Day this Friday. Students need to bring two (2) books in Spanish in order to be excused for the Color's Day.

*Please return graded papers by the due date. Thanks!

Reading-We are reading about Earth Day, how to keep our planet beautiful.

Science-We continue our unit on simple machines.

Writing-Students are reviewing writing with a beginning, middle, and end.

Weekly Gazette (April 12th-April 16th)

What's My Child Learning This Week?

Reading-We continue reading The Ugly Vegetables. We focus on the skills of questioning and sequencing important events.

Math-We begin a unit on probability- the chance that an event is likely, unlikely, certain, or impossible to happen.

Science-We are working on the unit: Simple Machines/Force and Motion. This week, students will learn six simple machines and their characteristics.

Writing-Students will begin content writing integrating the information from the science unit Simple Machines. We are learning capital cursive letters!

Word Wall- The words this week have prefixes: unhappy, rewrite, misbehave, unkind, disagree, bicycle


Tests/Quizzes

*Reading assessment quiz on sequencing Thursday, April 15th. Students will have to sequence events from the story The Ugly Vegetables.

*Math quiz on problem solving Wednesday, April 14th.

*Vocabulary quiz on Force/Push/Pull Friday, April 16th. Study guide will be sent home tomorrow.

*Word Wall quiz Friday.

*Writing assessment Tuesday, April 13th. The purpose of this assessment is to monitor/view students' individual writing progress so far this year.

Weekly Gazette (April 5th-April 9th)

What's My Child Learning This Week?

Reading-We begin a unit this week on various reading skills. The unit will be covered for the next three or four weeks. The primary reading text is The Ugly Vegetables from the reading basal. This week, our focus skill is sequencing events.

Math-We practice problem solving skills; we review three-digit addition and subtraction.

Writing- We will work on ideas for writing. We will also be doing an interactive writing about the virtue of the month: humility. We begin capital cursive letters this week!

Word Wall- The words this week come from our reading text: blooming, prickly, muscles, aroma, scent, trade. Please help your child use a dictionary to understand these words.

Science-We work on our science fair project. Also, we begin a unit on simple machines.
