Weekly Gazette (Week of Sept.28-Oct. 2)

What is My Child Learning This Week?

Reading- We focus on two skills: character traits and main idea. We will focus on main idea through nonfiction science texts relating to the Solar System.

Writing-We focus on writing paragraphs and how a piece of writing needs a good beginning, middle, and end. We also begin to focus on grammar such as punctuation, capitalization, and the characteristics of a good sentence.

Science-We continue learning about the Solar System. Students will begin to research characteristics of each planet!

Word Wall-children, can't, the, eating, what, night. We continue working on phonemic awareness activities to facilitate good spelling.

Math-Place value up to 1,000. Students are learning how to read, write, and say three-digit numbers. They are learning how to add and subtract ones, tens, and hundreds.


Tests/Quizzes
  • Word Wall quiz this Friday, October 2nd.

  • Reading quiz on story elements Thursday, October 1st. (Hopefully, we will finally have this quiz. It has been postponed twice. We have reviewed material in class.)

  • Solar System characteristics quiz Wednesday, September 30th. Students will have to list facts they have learned so far about the solar system. They will also have fill-in-the-blank statements relating to basic information they have learned thus far.

  • Writing assessment Thursday, October 1st. Students will be assessed on how well they are progressing in writing. Weaknesses will be used for further instruction and as feedback to parents.
Important Information
  • Students will begin using a Reading Log this week. They will begin going home tomorrow, September 29th.
